Chaperone Policy of Therapeutic Touch Physiotherapy Clinic
A chaperone is a third party to an appointment or to a clinical
examination, who aims to provide support and reassurance to
the patient, witness the continuing consent to a procedure, and
on occasion provide practical help to the physiotherapist.
All patients are entitled to a chaperone and are offered one at
the time of booking their appointment and prior to physical
examinations. If you would like a formal chaperone
present, please inform us prior to your appointment. You may
ask for a chaperone at any time however, and have the right to
decline treatment until one is provided.
You are welcome to bring an informal chaperone, such as an
adult family member or friend, along to your appointments.
Patients are encouraged to maintain independence and self-care
as far as is practicable, for example, by undressing themselves.
Assistance is only given if it has been clarified that this is
required.
Thank You
Felix Jose
1. Introduction
Therapeutic Touch is committed to ensuring a safe, comfortable, and respectful environment for all patients. This Chaperone Policy outlines our procedures for providing chaperones during physiotherapy consultations and treatments.
2. Purpose of a Chaperone
A chaperone is present to provide reassurance and support to the patient, assist in clinical procedures, and act as an observer for both the patient and the practitioner.
3. When a Chaperone is Offered
A chaperone may be offered or requested in the following situations:
- During any examination or treatment where intimate areas are involved.
- If the patient feels more comfortable with a third party present.
- If the physiotherapist deems it necessary for professional reasons.
4. Requesting a Chaperone
- Patients may request a chaperone at any time before or during treatment. If a chaperone is unavailable, the appointment may be postponed to the next available slot.
- Where possible, a trained staff member will act as a chaperone.
- If a chaperone is unavailable, the patient may reschedule their appointment.
5. Role of the Chaperone
The chaperone will:
- Remain in the room throughout the examination or treatment.
- Respect patient confidentiality and privacy.
- Provide reassurance and intervene if necessary.
- Maintain professional conduct at all times.
6. Patient Consent
- The physiotherapist will explain the need for an examination or treatment and obtain verbal consent from the patient.
- If a patient refuses a chaperone, this will be documented in their records.
7. Confidentiality and Record Keeping
- Chaperones will maintain strict confidentiality regarding any discussions or treatments observed.
- The presence of a chaperone and any relevant details will be documented in the patient’s record.
8. Refusal of a Chaperone
Patients have the right to decline a chaperone; however, in some cases, the physiotherapist may decide to postpone treatment if they feel it is not appropriate to proceed without one.
9. Safeguarding and Professionalism
All staff acting as chaperones receive training to ensure they understand their role. Any concerns about patient safety or professional conduct should be reported immediately.
